I would go with the MSD 6AL. My set up has been the 6AL, with MSD Blaster 2 and matching distributor for years. Building new engine now (351W) and putting in another "3 pack" as outline before. My last 6AL wen in my 5.0 (302) in 2002. worked well in my Factory Five MK1 Cobra replica. 6AL should give you a better set up in your Firebird.

An MSD 6A Ignition will improve the overall performance of your engine thanks to its high output capacitive discharge sparks. Below 3,000 rpm the ignition delivers multiple sparks that will clean up the idle, improve starting and throttle response. Step up to the 6AL to have an engine saving rev limiter.

One of the outstanding test is the coil must run for 5 minutes running at 1800 RPM without a coil wire attached, this test is performed 3 times before arriving the packaging department. This is to test the quality of the potting material, assuring that porosities or air bubbles are not present.

PDF filethe tach output on a MSD 6AL ignition. It can NOT be connected directly to the coil or the dash will be damaged! If a dedicated Tach output, such as those found on the MSD ignition boxes “Tach out”, is not available, MSD part number 8918 should be purchased. This is attached directly to the coil and conditions the signal for the dash.

Analog: If using an analog controlled MSD 6A, 6T or 6AL series, SCI series, 7AL series, MSD 8 or 10 or Blaster Ignition, the correct connection is when the timing is retarded. Digital: If using an MSD Digital-6 or Digital-7 Plus, or the Programmable Digital-7 Ignition Controls, the correct connection is when the timing is more advanced.

There are two solutions: 1) increase coil current. The problem with this is that you will burn out points (if equipped) much faster, since the coil’s current is passing through the points. 2) increase the coil’s primary voltage. This is the solution that Jacob’s, Universal, MSD
