The factory clamps are made to be removed and replaced, which is why you can't use a screw driver to reinstall them. If you're not familiar with this clamp the installation operation won't work using a screwdrive because the surface you would rely on to convert torque to the screw is an incline plane so you can't get a purchase on the screw head.What is this hose? 4) After removing the shield, the fuel filter is secured by a bracket. Use a 10mm socket to remove it. (Correct) 5) The hoses are secured by a bunch of clamps. Use a "flat top" screw driver to loosen the clamps. To tighten the clamps use a 7/32 socket or a pair of pliers. You CANNOT tighten the clamps with a flat top screw driver.

A badly clogged fuel filter will most certainly cause a fuel pump failure, or even worse clogged fuel injectors. 6) Fuel Filter - Removal. Using a flat head screw driver or pliers, loosen the 3 clamps attached to the fuel pipes. This may take a while. The clamps indicated in the photo should be loosened, rather than removed. Once the clamps are loosened, remove the 4 fuel pipes from the Fuel Filter.

Having just replaced my E46's fuel filter, I will say that if you can get the rubber fuel hoses and new clamps installed on the new filter, you will save yourself a major PITA. If I were to do it again, I would not only get new clamps, but the 3" black rubber connecting hoses, and remove the filter by cutting the old hoses out with a set of tin snips just after the nipples on the old filter.
